The Basics
What is speech-language therapy?
It’s a service provided by a regulated professional to assess, treat, and support speech, language development, communication, eating/feeding, voice, and swallowing. Under the supervision of a registered Ontario SLP (regulated by CASLPO), we help your child grow their:
- Expressive and receptive language (understanding and using words and sentences)
- Pragmatic / social communication (interaction, conversation, non-verbal cues)
- Speech production (articulation, clarity) and fluency (e.g., stuttering)
- Voice quality (pitch, loudness, resonance)
- Augmentative & alternative communication (AAC) beyond speech
- Feeding / swallowing where relevant, and participation at school, home, and in the community

What speech therapy looks like
- An assessment of speech and communication strengths and challenges
- A discussion of family priorities and goals
- Development of an individualized goal plan
- Direct therapy delivered by a speech therapy assistant trained in working with children and youth
- Ongoing direct (virtual) supervision by the SLP

Speech therapy, answered
Does my child need a doctor’s referral or assessment?
No — a doctor’s referral is not required. Previous assessments, if current, can be helpful and may reduce the need for additional testing.
How often should sessions occur?
Frequency depends on the assessment and goals. Some children benefit from weekly sessions, others from more frequent or shorter-term specialized supports. A personalized recommendation is provided after assessment.
Does insurance or public funding cover services?
Some extended health benefit plans cover registered SLP services. If your child is in publicly funded programs (e.g., for ASD) or government-sponsored supports, our clinic can provide invoices and documentation to assist. Please check your individual plan requirements.
Can I be present during sessions?
Absolutely — we love when parents and caregivers participate. You’re always welcome to observe and to be incorporated into your child’s programming.
What about school involvement?
We strongly encourage collaboration with the school team. We can provide strategies for educators, attend school meetings if needed, and support the transfer of skills into the classroom.
Fees
What speech therapy costs
Speech-Language Pathologist
$150–$230 / hr
Assessment, goal-setting, supervision, and program design by a registered SLP.
SLP Assistant / CDA
$85–$150 / hr
Direct therapy hours. 10–15% supervision at the SLP’s rate is recommended.
Hourly rates reflect the education and training of the person delivering the service. Other fees may apply for travel time and distance, report writing, assessments, meetings, and before/after-therapy care.
